Hamann's writing is strongly concerned with entering into a dialogue with the reader, and this is demonstrated by examining his use of intertextuality, his epistolary conversations, and his use of metaphor and rhetorical devices. In this, the idea of condescendence is a central influence on Hamann's work - just as God reveals himself in nature, history and the word in order to establish a relationship with humans, Hamann wishes to enter into a dialogue with his contemporaries.

With reference to the relationship between text and author, a subject as challenging as it is problematic in textual criticism terms, the members of the Munich postgraduate research group on »Textual Criticism as Foundation and Method in Historical Studies« here present the findings of their Venice symposium and in so doing give impressive evidence of their competence on the practical and theoretical plane. The range of subjects addressed stretches from inscriptions from the ancient world and medieval authorial awareness to musical works of the Renaissance and from there to texts culled from p

This documentation of the genesis of Goethe's works was compiled in the 1950s by Momme and Katharina Mommsen at the Deutsche Akademie der Wissenschaften [German Academy of Sciences] in East Berlin. The editorial board of the EGW is currently located at the Georg-August University in Göttingen, where editing of the work continues through the support of the Mommsen Foundation for the Advancement of Goethe Research in California. The work reconstructs and documents the history of the genesis of Goethe's works, based on all of the currently available documents, letters and personal journal entries

Theoretical debate has declared the author obsolete. In practice, however, certain usages of the author concept are repeatedly demonstrated as being legitimate. This discrepancy suggests that theoretical reflection on the author fails to do justice to central forms of the scholarly approach to literature. The articles in this volume take both systematic and historical perspectives on this controversial term in an attempt to accurately reconstruct the history of the concept and to analyze the problem constellations generated by it in practice. The discussion also extends to non-literary media s
